Understand your potting mix

The mix is part of the watering system.

Potting mixes differ in how much water they hold and how much air remains around the roots. Read the label and look at the ingredients instead of judging only by colour. Bark, mineral particles and finer organic material contribute different textures, but a successful recipe also depends on the plant and your indoor conditions.

Try a small batch before changing every pot in a collection. Record how quickly it dries under your normal conditions. A mix that works in a bright, warm room may stay wet much longer in a cool, shaded one. Use products intended for container growing and follow species-specific guidance when caring for plants with unusual root systems.
