Choose a pot for the roots

The decorative outer pot and the growing pot can do different jobs.

A nursery pot with drainage holes inside a decorative container is a practical arrangement. It lets you lift the plant out for watering, check for standing water and change the display without disturbing the roots. Make sure the inner pot can be removed without pulling on the plant.

When repotting, choose the new size according to the root system and the species. A much larger pot holds more wet growing mix around a small root ball. Drainage holes are more useful than a layer of stones at the bottom, which does not replace an outlet for excess water. Keep a saucer or waterproof tray under pots to protect furniture.
